To deepen your understanding of the ideas introduced in Kozol’s Amazing Grace, you will engage in several small group discussions. Each group member assumes one of three or four roles for the discussion and completes the assignment for that role prior to coming to class. A description of each role follows. Group members change roles for each discussion.
Discussion Director
Prepares at least three OPEN-ENDED questions based on the reading. Open-ended prompts might be: Why do you think…? OR How does the author….?

Connector
Connects one or more of the ideas/thoughts to something from his/her own experience: text to text, text to life, text to world or connections to your professional life.

Vocabulary Linguist
Identifies at least five words, phrases, expressions, figure of speech used in the reading that represent a new concept or an interesting way of communicating something.
Defines and explains these words clearly and concisely using own language (not copied or downloaded)
Includes graphics, pictures, illustrations to help communicate meanings

Critical Analyst
Prepares written summary highlighting the major thoughts or ideas contained in the reading.
