It's hard to believe that an engine builder can't calculate and check the valve and piston clearance when building an engine.
In this photo you can see how the piston's impact with the valve has worn the surface of the piston.
Here's a picture of the cylinder head, note how the edge of the valve is worn from contact with the piston.
The problem is not isolated to a single cylinder, virtually every piston have valve damage.
