I downloaded this game looking for dungeon crawlers. It's a really awesome game, but kind of difficult.
I started off with the Rogue class just because I liked it. The graphics are quite good and it works really well on phone touch screens. You touch a tile to move to it. The point is to get to the next level down in the dungeon without dying from enemy attacks. They have loads of stuff like potions, scrolls, weapons, rings and armour in rooms in the dungeon which you can equip. But quite a lot of it is "too heavy" for the player and you have to drink potions of strength to use them. They have stuff like cursed rings that have negative effects (for example, there are "rings of mending" that speed up your health regeneration but cursed rings of mending slow down your health regeneration and you can't take them off unless you waste a scroll of upgrade on it to get rid of the curse.)
They have locked doors on most levels and you need keys to open them.
PD is turn based so you only get to do stuff on your turn or wait for the enemy to do something else. If that's difficult to explain, basically it's not a hack-and-slash game. When the enemy makes a move, you get as much time as you want to decide what to do before the enemy is allowed to do anything else, so it's more of a strategy game really. (Games branded as "strategy" like Clash of Clans often aren't really strategy but Pixel Dungeon actually is.)
The thing you should know about this game is that if you die you have to start again from level 1. Can be frustrating sometimes.
And the best thing about this game?Â
NO IN APP PURCHASES!!!!
If you read my other reviews (the worst ones are Goodgame Empire, Clash of Clans, Dungeon Keeper and Danger Dash) you'll know just how annoying IAPs are. PD is actually made to be fun, not to take away all the fun unless you pay real money. Exactly right.
As I already mentioned, the game is quite difficult, but challenging and satisfying. Watabou (the developer) has judged this exactly right. (Thanks for a really great game!) Not so easy that it's boring, and not so difficult that you want to smash your phone.
If you don't want to spend the whole game clicking the search button you're almost certainly going to step on an invisible pressure plate and get poisoned or paralyzed or end up making the trap emit a really loud sound calling all the enemies to you. Plus, I've played loads of times and only beat the first boss 5 times, the second boss once and the third boss once, as of now.
Anyway, it's an awesome game, so play it!
