PG, Jonas has a surprise for Sam!
Earth holidays were different to Kelownan ones, Christmas had been fun and now another holiday was due. Though this one was only one day and was more of a personal event, but Jonas had been thinking about it for weeks.
Three hours to go until he could carry out his plan and so far no off world crisis was threatening to jeopardise it. He checked the fridge; yes everything was looking good.
A couple of hours later, Sam zipped up her leather jacket, pulled her helmet over her head, and threw one leg over her motorbike. She savoured for a moment the sound of the deep throaty engine, brought to life by the turn of the ignition key. Her leather gauntlets were lying on the tank and she pushed her hands into them securing the Velcro straps so they fitted snug on her hands. After a quick flick to the visor so it covered her eyes, she pulled in the clutch and stepped down on the gearshift. Letting the clutch out slowly as she opened the throttle and the powerful machine accelerated away down the mountain toward Colorado Springs.
The driveway of the house was empty, that was strange Sam had expected Teal'c's pick-up to be there before her, she locked her bike then knocked on the door.
"Hi, come in, " Jonas greeted her.
"Hi," she showed him her helmet, with the gloves tucked inside, "Is there somewhere…"
He pointed to table in the hallway; "you can leave your stuff there."
"Thanks."
Sam placed her helmet down where Jonas had indicated and threw her leather jacket on top, then followed him through to the living area.
Instead of the expected pizza boxes on the coffee table, a pile of DVDs by the TV, the seating area was dimly lit; a single bright light focused on the dinning table. It was set for two. Jonas pulled out a chair indicating that he wanted her to sit.
A little puzzled she did so and before she had a chance to say anything, Jonas had placed a starter in front of her, a selection of different types of melon. He sat down opposite her and picked up his fork.
"Dig in."
Sam picked up her own fork, looked down at the dish, but then looked back up at Jonas.
He smiled warmly and the question that had been on her mind was completely forgotten, comprehension dawned. When had he started to look her in a different way? she thought back over the last few months, they had become friends, enjoyed discussing the same subjects, laughed, yes there had been lots of laughter. And now…
Jonas reached across the table and took her hand in his and she had another realisation, she'd been looking at him differently for awhile too, but had dismissed it. After all, wasn't Jack the one she cared about? Seemed she'd thought that forever. Anyway why would Jonas or anyone want someone so mixed up as her, someone with a head full of alien memories, someone that cared more about physics than fun…or was that because it was hard to have fun when you not with someone?
Sam removed her hand and began to eat her melon and the moment passed, they began to talk as they always did. After the melon, Jonas brought in the main course, chicken in a creamy sauce, on a bed of fluffy white rice. She complemented him on his cooking and he laughed, "All I did was pierce the film with a fork and stick it in the microwave!"
For a second she didn't believe him, but she could see the truth in his eyes. Eyes that were looking at her in a way she'd never noticed before; the food was forgotten, there was another truth in those eyes, she'd dismissed it earlier, now there was no doubt, there was something happening between them, a connection she couldn't ignore.
She broke away from his glaze, concentrating on the food, trying to forget the feelings she had experienced. She lasted a few mouthfuls before she had to look up again. Jonas had finished his food and was about to take a sip from his glass; he paused and smiled at her. Sam's insides melted and she again lost interest in the food. This time the amount left on the plate was small enough to pretend she had finished. She lay down her fork, indicating she too had finished.
A slight frown passed over Jonas's forehead, "I hope you aren't too full for dessert?"
She felt a need to reassure him that she appreciated his efforts, "I can always find room for dessert."
"Good! Because I made something special just for you."
Jonas cleared the table, placing the plates by the sink and then took a covered serving dish from the fridge. He placed it in the centre of the table and lifted the lid with a flourish. Inside were two perfectly formed hearts made from blue Jell-O.
"Happy Valentine's Day!" he announced.
"Oh!" was all she able to reply, she had completely forgotten the holiday but it was perfectly clear that Jonas hadn't and knowing how well he researched Earth history there was no doubt that he understood exactly what the day symbolised.
"Sam..." he didn't get to finish the sentence, she stood up and took a step towards him. As much as she enjoyed eating blue Jell-O, she reckoned she would enjoy kissing Jonas more. As their lips came together she knew she was right.
