If a student is under the age of 18, the student cannot voluntarily participate in university sponsored research unless parental consent and student assent is acquired, a provision that must be approved by the IRB. If you have an IRB-approved protocol that explicitly permits minors to participate, you must proceed in accordance with your approved protocol. Always check with students when they arrive to make sure that they are not under 18.
SONA can automatically filter prospective participants based on age. Navigate to "Study Info" for the study in question, then click "View/Modify Restrictions" in the "Prescreen Restriction" section. Click the "under-18" box, then click "Set Restrictions." On the next page, select the appropriate answer for your restrictions. All students who included that response on their prescreen will be able to see your study; any other students will not be able to see it.
