HIGHLIGHT AT HOUSTON CENTER
GENSLER
HOUSTON, TEXAS
PROJECT ARCHITECT, BIM MANAGER : SPRING 2020 - TBD
The re-imagined Shops at Houston Center invites Houston's vibrant, diverse population and comes to life as a dining, retail, and entertainment destination in the central business district.
Expanding upon the successful and transformative renovation of the iconic Houston Center Complex, this next phase elevates four levels of retail, food and beverage, and health and wellness offerings. Spanning two city blocks, The Shops at Houston Center aims to create a vibrant downtown destination that is activated morning to night and invites a diverse mix of tenants and visitors alike. The Shops now also serve as an extension of Discovery Green, drawing in park-goers as well as visitors from the nearby Theater District and convention center.
The former retail center was defined by a monolithic, closed-off facade that created a distinct barrier from the street and hid interior activation. Inside, visitors had to wind through dated retail corridors to reach the food court. The original retail design was a mismatched collection of competing storefronts and signage that created a jarring visual experience.
Gensler's comprehensive scope includes a new street-level entrance, complete renovation of all public spaces and tenant storefronts on the first and second floors, the addition of windows and other shell renovations throughout the second floor. The design also includes the option for a fourth-floor roof deck, outdoor seating, and additional lounge space to further activate the area.
Aiming to drastically elevate the street presence while adding visual interest to the homogenous facade, the redesign incorporates a significant amount of new windows to increase visibility and showcase interior activated spaces from street level. A dramatic multi-story entrance on the northeast corner of the complex faces Discovery Park, enticing and funneling visitors directly into the food court. While some popular food tenants are retained, the re-imagined food court is transformed with more seating options, new furniture, and all new finishes – attracting a higher tier of fresh food offerings.
Gensler's retail storefront design presents new frames, neutral palettes, intuitive and harmonious design language, and new tenant and signage guidelines. Subtle, cohesive storefronts and circulation paths offer an organized and visually appealing experience.
Lighter, brighter, and more transparent, the contemporary interiors are approachable and inviting. Dated metal handrails are updated to glass, and worn carpets are replaced by porcelain tile, with touches of wood veneer finish for warmth. New furniture provides pops of color and energy, and all public and storefront finishes are entirely new and fresh.
