Introduction:
Merit badges signify the mastery of certain outdoor skills, as well as helping boys increase their skill in an area of personal interest.
Of the 130+ merit badges available, 21 must be earned to qualify for Eagle Scout. Of this group, 13 badges are required, including First Aid, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Communication, Cooking, Environmental Science, Personal Fitness, Personal Management, Camping, and Family Life. In addition, a Scout has a choice between Emergency Preparedness and Lifesaving and a choice among Cycling, Hiking, and Swimming.
You can learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers as you earn merit badges. Any Boy Scout may earn a merit badge at any time. You don't need to have had rank advancement to be eligible.
You are expected to meet the requirements as they are stated—no more and no less. You must do exactly what is stated in the requirements. If it says "show or demonstrate," that is what you must do. Just telling about it isn't enough. The same thing holds true for such words as "make," "list," "in the field," and "collect," "identify," and "label."
