As you know we will be staying at Wilcox this year. Several of the new Staffers have asked about staying at Wilcox and what they might expect. Several seasoned staffers have provided an excellent overview of life at Wilcox...
We will stay in two-story army barracks (no elevator). They have two rows of bunk beds in each wing, four wings per barrack. (Don't remember the number) and are on a first come first take basis. Each bunk may have a small locker, but probably not a foot locker (bring one). There is one electrical outlet per bunk. The toilet and showers are shared with both sides of the barracks. There is supposed to be air conditioning <fingers crossed>. Nights get cool and a light blanket is often needed. Good idea to bring a stool or chair, because sitting on the bunk is not comfortable and impossible if you have the upper bunk.
The PX is within walking distance and has been open to the BSA in the past. There is also a small snack bar there.
Laundry is done in coin operated machines that are not located in the barracks and are limited in number. In the past we have tried to us the ones in the sub camps our loaded up and gone into town. Parking is limited. There are wash, dry and fold laundries in Fredericksburg. Sudsy Duds or something like that on Jefferson Davis Blvd. Pay by the pound. Drop off, come back and get the next day. Really helps when you have no free time. I suspect that someone will be willing to go to town and take laundry (remember to label your gear!!).
Staff buses run all day and late into the evenings. Wilcox is a large camp and many groups use it so buses load up quickly.
There is a dinning hall that serves breakfast and dinner. We will likely have "Dine Anyw
here" passes for Breakfast and Dinner, but Lunch will likely be from a kiosk.Wilcox is were the Army field hospital is located and there is a large number of military personal in camp also. Phone service is suppose to be better this time so cells may work. Other wise pay phones are available. Things do not dry quickly so towels and sweaty clothes do not dry out over night. Other wise it is just like home. (Maybe)
