Runner of the Year – Olivia Schuering, Sr., Quincy (Sr.)–

Sports aren't always fair.  In 2022 Olivia Schuering was having a fantastic cross country season with multiple wins, top ten finishes in almost every race, and a top 4 finish at the Quincy Regional.  While crossing the finish line at the regional meet, she felt a pop in her foot and her season was essentially over.  She started the sectional meet but couldn’t finish, thus ending her dominant junior campaign. After healing, she worked all track season to get back to where she was in the fall.  Entering her senior cross country season, nothing was going to hold Olivia back from having success and finishing her Blue Devil career on a high.  Olivia showed dominance once again, having victories at the Running Raider Classic, Tom Oakley Invitational, Liberty Invitational, and Western Big Six.  Olivia then turned her focus to the unfinished business of the postseason.  At the Alton Regional, she finished in 7th place and led her team to a sectional berth.  This year, she was able to compete in the sectional championship healthy and punched her ticket to the IHSA state cross country championships after finishing 24th.  On the storied Detweiller park course she finished in 130th place in the 3A race in a time of 18:45.   Olivia Schuering showed tremendous heart and determination during this season and over her career and that is what has earned her the Tri-State Cross Country Coaches Girls Runner of the Year for 2023.
