After the independence of India, the foundation of the town was planned by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the second chief minister of West Bengal and therefore is the founding father of the town. On 24
th February, 1951 around 10 am the then Governor of West Bengal Dr. Kailashnath Katju officially laid the foundation stone of the town. The responsibility of looking into the planning and initial development of the town was given to Hiranmoy Bandopadhyay (I.C.S) who later on became the Vice-Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University.The first two tasks that were taken up was to take formidable steps for the development of the sectors of health and engineering. Although the foundation stone was laid in ‘A Block’ first, but the progressive development of ‘B block’ took an upward steep.
