In 2016, Palermo residents voted to contract with the Town of China for use of its Transfer Station, located at 191 Alder Park Rd. Access to the China Transfer Station is regulated by a Yearly Sticker. These Stickers are available at the Palermo Town Office. The cost of the Sticker is $2.00. Palermo residents need to purchase labeled trash bags to use the dumpsters at the Transfer Station, which are available at the Palermo Town Office or Tobey's General Store on Rt. 3.
You can find more information about China's Transfer Station, including their recycling and waste policies on their website and below.
Beginning in January 2023 the Transfer Station will accept #5 plastics such as shampoo bottles, yogurt containers,
plastic cutlery and cups.
No black plastic can be accepted in either #2 or #5.
The China Transfer Station is located at 191 Alder Park Rd. China, ME 04358. The town and staff at the transfer station would like to encourage residents to recycle more and throw less trash in the "hopper." A substantial savings can be realized if all community members participate in the various recycling programs the transfer station offers.
Supply chain issues require an increase to bag costs. The Town of Palermo sells China Transfer Station bags to our residents at cost.
15 gallon trash bags, 8 to a roll: $12.80
30 gallon bags, 5 to a roll: $15.00
Mixed Paper - What's Acceptable at the China Transfer Station
Mixed Paper includes clean , dry, lightweight paper that does not fall into any other dedicated category. Acceptable papers include office paper, colored paper, envelopes, brochures, flyers, catalogs, magazines and other similar non-brown, coated paper products.
Not accepted in Mixed Paper are:
Brown Fiber materials such as corrugated cardboard, kraft paper, and brown paper bags (cardboard cans colored blue).
Newspapers (newspaper box)
Wrapping paper (not recyclable and considered trash)
Shredded paper (goes to compost, no plastic, metal or other contamination).
Egg cartoons (not recyclabe in Mixed paper, saved for food pantry).
Food soiled paper, waxed or plastic-laminated paper, thermal receipts, paper cups and any other composite or contaminated paper products are considered trash.
Mixed Paper is our second most recycled commodity at the Transfer station. It costs about $35 per ton to recycle Mixed Paper, compared to $87 per ton to dispose of it in landfill - meaning recycling Mixed Paper saves over $50 per ton. So far, we have recycled 32 tons of mixed paper! This saved the town over $1,600 in disposal costs. Great job everyone.
Thank you for helping to keep the landfill from growing.
Keeping Mixed Paper clean and properly sorted ensures both environmental and financial benefits. If you have any suggestions for the Transfer Station, we have
a new suggestion box located in the recycling center.
2026 Transfer station passes are now available!
