Revenue per capita: continental summary measures

Dataset highlights

  • Government revenue by type on an annual basis 1900-2015

  • Covers virtually all continental African polities, most of them with data for all of the 115 years

  • Data comparable across time and countries:

    • Bottom up aggregation based on more than 130,000 individual items (~25,000 of them are unique)

    • Classification following the IMF guidelines, except for separation of resource revenues

    • Use of urban wages as deflators -> revenues can be expressed as wage days per capita.

  • Read & cite full paper and paper appendix published in International Organization when using data

  • Panel dataset that includes nominal and real values for different types of ordinary revenues

  • all based on our primary research (we created these data as discussed in the paper + appendix)
