Tijeras Arroyo Total Maximum Daily Load for Nutrients (2017)
In September 2017, after considerable public comment from TCWC agencies, a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for Nutrients in Tijeras Arroyo, prepared by the New Mexico Environment Department, was approved by the NM Water Quality Control Commission (WQCC). The TMDL was prepared because Tijeras Arroyo (aka Tijeras Creek) has been determined by NMED to be impaired by excessive nutrient loading. The TMDL calculates estimated nutrient load contributions from point sources (urban storm runoff) and non-point sources (non-urban runoff), and sets maximum nutrient discharges from these sources to ensure that water quality in Tijeras Creek achieves nutrient concentrations consistent with its designated uses in the WQCC Regulations. The TMDL will influence future directions and initiatives of the Tijeras Creek Watershed Collaborative.
