Additional Background
I am an assistant professor at Cardiff University as of May 2023 (formally at Durham University). My research focuses on attitudes, persuasion, the self, and research methods. My work has appeared in journals including Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Psychological Science, European Journal of Social Psychology, Personality and Individual Differences, Journal of Research in Personality, the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, and Self and Identity. I have presented research and/or chaired talks at annual conferences of the Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA), International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP), Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP), Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), and the Association for Psychological Science (APS). During my academic career, I have been supported by an Ontario Graduate Scholarship Award and two Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council fellowships (at the Master's and Doctoral level).
I took my undergraduate at the University of Alberta, completing an honor's degree in arts, with a major in psychology. For my honor's thesis, I completed experiments on "The role of intrinsic religiosity in priming: Increasing cooperative behaviour in two studies of the Dictator Game”. I then completed my doctoral studies in the Social-Personality area of psychology, working in the Fab Lab, an attitude laboratory with a focus on attitude formation, stability and change, and personality factors. I was primarily under the supervision of Dr. Leandre Fabrigar. My master's thesis considers the "Effects of introspection on meta and structural attitude bases". My doctoral thesis explored the antecedents and psychological functions of desired attitudes across several experimental paradigms. A few of my other research endeavors are collected here, and I am always looking for thoughts and questions (please send any inquiries to thomasvaughanjohnston@gmail.com).
