Genetics Camp 2018
Camp Theme: Microbial Genetics and Antibiotic Resistance
Since the introduction and development of antibiotics, it has transformed the field of public health and medicine. Such discovery has been a therapeutic revolution giving cure to lethal diseases and disabling infections. However, the miracle development of antibiotics is being battered by the emergence of antibiotic resistance.
Our society is faced with the threat of antibiotic resistance, the ability of microorganisms to grow despite exposure to antibiotics, rendering their use ineffective against previously treatable diseases and infections. This phenomenon leads to the crises of people developing severe and prolonged illnesses, and increasing their healthcare costs and mortality rate. Its damage does not only limit to humans, but also to plants and animals, which can impend economic development and global security.
In this regard, The UPLB Genetics Society takes the initiative of bringing together a nationwide pool of young scientists through a series of symposia with distinguished speakers and guests, laboratory activities, and contests highlighting the essence of Microbial Genetics and the role it plays in human society. It serves as a campaign to create awareness about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and a platform to showcase the talents of the Filipino youth.
Genetics Camp is an annual event hosted by The UPLB Genetics Society for high school students. Through the years, GenCamp has been widely known for featuring interesting feats in the science of Genetics while having fun!
