I've been interested in over-dubbing and self-producing music ever since I used an old boom-box and an answering machine to record my first all-Trevor trombone quartet. Here are some of the things I've made since then.
I've been lucky to always be able to surround myself with musical people. Here are some of the bands and projects I've been involved with.
One of the most enriching projects I did as an undergraduate was for ::Dr. Silvio Dos Santos:: in which we deconstructed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the gateway into the Romantic Era. I argued that the piece is a Bildungsroman, in which the listener is brought through transcendent stages towards Elysium.
This is a long-form music piece composed for sculpted computer-randomness implemented through Sonic Pi.
There are several global characteristics that oversee a larger structure of the piece.
There are several distinct synthesizer modules, each with their own local characteristics.
Many of the characteristics change slowly over time by way of randomly-walking variables.
Other characteristics can change suddenly, but do so depending on global probabilistic settings.
This collection of recordings were captured periodically through a three-week-long instance of this piece played throughout Shoreline Community College's 2024 Faculty Art Show.
Field Recordings taken in Shoreline, WA.
Here's a link to a talk I give to the Shoreline Honors College each Fall about some connections between math, art, and music.
A piece of sheet music is two-dimensional. A cigar box guitar is three-dimensional. Music is multi-dimensional. What about the space between? A fractal is an idea with a fractional dimension.
This is a piece of music I wrote inspired by fractal forms.
A trip to the ::Museum of Mathematics:: inspired this exploration into the shape of triads.
In the past, I've built some simple instruments using kitchen vessels, cigar boxes, weed whacker strings, etc... Recently, I've had some more earnest attempts
I've been making a small collection of unusual-for-music-box songs punched into a DIY music box kit.
