Are there jatis/castes* in India?
Does caste* exist in Indian society?
Yes, of course, there are. There are castes [let us assume, for the sake of discussion, that ‘caste’ is an English word for ‘Jati’] such as Lingayat, Pariya, Kapu, Gowda and Nayar. No one is denying this obvious fact. That is to say, there are people in India who claim that they belong to some or another caste, even if they do not know what ‘caste’ is, in what sense their group is a ‘caste’ and what it means to belong to one. This is a sociological ‘fact’.
