than to assist another human being
- to help someone succeed.
Alan Loy McGinnis
Iuri "Yuri" Lebedev
I was born in Belarus in 1957 and was taught to play chess by my parents when I was seven years old.
I have been teaching chess since 1982. In order to develop as a chess coach, I have taken part in a number of seminars over the years, notably: in 1982, for the leading chess coaches of the Belarus Republic; in 1983, for the leading chess coaches of the Former Soviet Union; in 1987 I participated as a coach in the Summer Training Camp for the best young players of USSR Trade Union in the small town of Zakataly (in what is now known as the Azerbaydzhan Republic). Among our students in that camp were future chess stars such as Ekaterina Kovalevskaya, Sergei Tiviakov, and Vladimir Kramnik.
I was promoted to the position of Senior Coach of our provincial chess team in 1986. Young players of our provincial chess team, prepared by me, won the championship of the Belarus Republic three times. Many of my students, such as Sergei Zhuck (FIDE rating 2448), have become strong masters.
I have been teaching chess in Toronto since 1999. After successfully teaching for the Chess Academy of Canada for two years, I established my own chess school (The Knights of Chess) in 2002. My school’s students have shown great results even after only 1 year of study:
These results are hard to beat. Most recently, I have been teaching chess in the following private schools: Crestwood Preparatory College, Montessori, Crescent, and Upper Canada College.
Dozens of my students are Ontario champions and medalists.
Over the years, my students participated in National Championships and have won 11 times the title of National Champion. 7 of my students achieved the title of National Master or higher.
As a chessplayer myself, I attained the level of the Soviet Union’s Candidate Master in 1985 which is approximately equal to Master within the Canadian Federation of Chess. A Master in Canada has earned 2200 points. After immigration to Canada, I seldom played in chess competitions and the highest rating I have achieved to date in Canada is 2197. I accomplished this in 1999.
