Resume Rules:
What is a resume?
A resume is a “brag sheet.” Basically, what makes you the most appealing person for a job/school/etc.?
When will I use a resume?
Job interviews. Some college applications. Asking Mr. Harkin for a letter of reference. And other situations.
Bring your resume—there’s nothing like the first impression.
Resume RULES:
1) Your resume is one page. Not longer. Longer is not better.
2) ALWAYS tell the truth (the George O’Leary story).
3) It has to be “attractive.” There are many different acceptable presentations of a resume. Find one that fits you and looks right (font, size, spacing, etc.).
4) NO MISTAKES. Remember what I said about first impressions?
5) You should be BUILDING your resume and be able to update it every six months.
MUST HAVES on your RESUME:
** At the top, your contact information (name, address, phone number, email).
** Education: Tucson Unified Virtual Academy, Class of 2025 (graduation pending). Grade Point Average: (only list if you’re above a 3.0).
** Career Objective: (This can and should change over time). ONE sentence. “Although undecided about a profession, I do know that I want to help animals.”
** Work Experience (yes, this can include volunteering but make sure you identify a volunteering gig as volunteering). LIST the job/volunteer title, dates of work and a brief, one/two sentence description. No more than THREE experiences and list the most important one, first.
Someone at McDonald’s (handles money, prepares “food,” greets customers, cleans the restaurant, etc.).
** Skills: Are you fluent in other languages? Do you have computer proficiency? Musical instruments?
** Interests: This shows a different, unique, fun side. I would suggest not listing girls and video games as interests.
** Organizations: Sports teams, clubs, etc.
** Two references. The best references are “teachers and preachers.” You cannot list your mother as a reference.
