Il tempio dorico passato

Antonio Labacco, Libro d'Antonio Labacco appartenente a l'architettvra nel qval si figvrano alcvne notabili antiqvita di Roma (Rome, 1552), p. 23

On this page, Labacco presents us with a reconstruction of one of the Doric temples in the Forum Holitorium. The Forum Holitorium was a vegetable market located at the southern tip of the Capitoline Hill, near the bank of the Tiber. Originally, there were four Republican temples in this area. In the medieval period, the remains of one of these temples was incorporated into the church of San Nicola in Carcere. The peperino columns of the original Roman building were embedded in the church walls and are still visible today. In this image, which combines the elements of an elevation, a ground plan and a cross-section, Labacco effaces any traces of later accretions and modifications to the Roman temple structure, "restoring" it to its original appearance.
