Post Doctoral Researchers

  • Selvakumar Jayaraman is originally from India. He obtained his B.Sc Chemistry in 2004, M.Sc Chemistry in 2007. He earned his Ph.D Chemistry from Pondicherry University, India in 2013. After one half year postdoctoral research in the Pondicherry University, he continued his postdoctoral research in Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India for one and half years. He joined the Arumugam research group in September 2016 and is doing research on electrochemically controlling the ring size of the cyclic polyesters. Apart from research Jay interested in reading novels, watching movies, playing badminton and trekking

Graduates

  • Jonathan Tummy, is a first year doctoral student from Dayton. He received his bachelor's and master's degree from Wright State University. His research interests are cancer drug design.

  • Kotiba Malek, Kotiba malek Originally from Iraq, was raised in Malaysia before attending high school at the United World College in Canada. After completing the International Baccalaureate program there, he pursed an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Kenyon College in Ohio, where he conducted and published research on the cytoplasmic response of individual cells of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis to acid stress observed by fluorescence ratio imaging microscopy. While at Kenyon, Kotiba also served as an Advanced EMT and firefighter for the college and surrounding townships. Currently, he is pursuing a Masters of sciences in chemistry and will be conducting researching on Silver N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and their potential as antimicrobial agents.

  • Meredith Miles is a first year graduate student from Greenville, Ohio. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wright State University in Spring 2016. Meredith has been with The Arumugam Research Group from the beginning, and she is currently focusing on the synthesis of tunable NHC-dithiolene linkers capable of numerous applications. In her spare time, Meredith enjoys playing viola, playing guitar, and taking in some live music.

Undergraduates

  • Alexander Castillo Guel is a Mexican national from the Monclova, Coahuila. He relocated to Hamilton, Ohio when he was 3 years old. He graduated first in his class from Hamilton High School in 2015. Alexander is currently a sophomore Chemistry major and Mathematics and Spanish minor at Wright State University. He began to work under the direction of Dr. Arumugam in January 2016. His current project is synthesizing Silver N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes for their antimicrobial properties. In his free time, Alex appreciates running, hiking, swimming, and participating in language and culture organizations.

  • Michael James Haas was born in Kettering Ohio and is currently living in Fairborn as he works to complete his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering with a pre-health emphasis at Wright State University. He joined The Arumugam Research Group in January of 2016 and is working on synthesizing gold-based N-heterocyclic carbenes with the goal of formulating a compound which induces apoptosis in cancer cells. His desire for a career in the medical field stems also from working as an Autotransfusionist for orthopedic surgeons in the Dayton area. Michael enjoys learning all things science related and is an avid reader of psychology, anthropology, and engineering texts. In his free time he enjoys working out, the outdoors, traveling, movies, company of friends and family, and his dog, Sheldon.

  • Don Hoang is majoring in biomedical engineering at Wright State University. He is an aspiring physician and plans on attending medical school once he graduates. He recently joined the Arumugam Research Group during the fall of 2016 and is working with Dr. Jay on synthesizing organometallic ferrocene compounds.

  • Catherine Evers Smith is a freshman chemistry major at Wright State University. She is from Cincinnati and went to Mount Notre Dame High School. Catherine joined the Arumugam Research group in September, 2016 and is currently working with Meredith Miles. Outside of the lab Catherine enjoys playing ultimate Frisbee, running, reading, and seeing the world.
