I am an ecologist and biogeochemist.

My research tests the effects of environmental change upon carbon and nitrogen cycling in marine and freshwater environments.

I am based at the Queen's University of Belfast and Queen's Marine Laboratory, Portaferry.

Research Interests

My research interests range from alpine streams to the deep-sea floor. Common themes in my work are how changes animal and microbial activity control macronutrient recycling. Major drivers of these effects are changes in ambient oxygen availability, quality of nutrient sources, disturbance and predation. I use an experimental approach, within mesocosms to bring nature into the laboratory, with state-of-the-art techniques such as stable-isotope tracers used to tease apart changes in the rates and pathways for carbon and nitrogen cycling.
