Monday through Wednesday, May 4-6, 2026
Lodging arranged by the TCHC at the Hotel Manor in Slate Run, PA
Nearby camping (arrangements on your own) is also available.
Trip Overview:
The Black Forest Trail (PDF) is a 42.2 mile long hiking loop in the Pine Creek region (Slate Run, PA) of north-central Pennsylvania. We will be hiking on the Black Forest Trail and other nearby trails, along with optional bicycling or hiking on the adjacent Pine Creek Gorge Rail Trail.
Lodging:
Hotel Manor (Slate Run, PA) rooms each have a queen-sized bed. Cost is the same for single or double occupancy. The TCHC has reserved all 10 rooms in the hotel. The $250 per room cost covers lodging for both nights (Monday and Tuesday) and includes a small continental breakfast the next morning. A large 'community' refrigerator is provided for guests.
Prior to making a payment for lodging in the Hotel Manor, you MUST contact trip leader, Rich Maggi, rmaggi@stny.rr.com, to verify room availability. A waiting list for lodging at the Hotel Manor will be started once all of the Hotel Manor lodging reservations are filled.. Refunds for Hotel Manor lodging can be made up till two weeks in advance of the trip.
Schedule Overview:
- Monday May 4th:
Arrive at Hotel Manor; rooms are available after 3 PM. Prior to check-in, you are on your own. An option -- Trip Leader Rich Maggi plans to do his Spring trail maintenance on the Bohen Trail (~ 2 miles from Blackwell to West Rim Trail). This section of trail crosses 2 waterfalls and follows a mountain stream up to the West Rim trail. At that point, maintenance if over but the group will continue on the West Rim trail up to a vista for lunch and follow the West Rim trail to its southern terminus at Rattlesnake Rock (this is about 8 miles). At that point the group can shuttle or walk 1.5 miles on the rail-trail back to Blackwell. More details later.
- Tuesday May 5th:
Complete last 6 miles of Black Forest trail (2 vistas and one 400 ft. climb). After lunch - free afternoon for biking.
- Wednesday May 6th:
Hike the 9 mile Golden Eagle trail - trailhead is 3 mile drive from Manor Hotel. Return home - optional dinner stop in Wellsboro. The Golden Eagle Trail is a 10.1-mile hiking trail in north-central Pennsylvania, forming a loop through a portion of Tiadaghton State Forest on the east side of Pine Creek Gorge. The trail also traverses Wolf Run Wild Area.
