How to get to the conference site (if you do not participate in the organised shuttle from Berlin)
Important!
You should arrive to Szklarska Poreba before the ski lifts stop running, which is at 15h30. If, however, this is not possible, you have two options:
walk to the top of the mountain: 1 hour 10 min (not recommended in foggy weather)
hire a snow scooter (expensive)
By plane:
Arrival by plane is possible via Berlin, Warsaw and Prague.
By car:
Szklarska Poreba can be reached from Jelenia Gora (Poland) or Harrachov (Czech Republic).
By train and bus:
Prague: This is perhaps the quickest way. Take the bus from Cerny Most to Jablonec nad Nisou and walk up to the train station Jablonec. Take the train to Korenov and then change trains to Szklarska Poreba.Â
Berlin: Take the train from Ostbahnhof to Goerlitz (2.5 hours), walk across the border to the Zgorzelec bus station (up until the top of the hill then right, 30 min). From here, there are buses to Jelenia Gora (2.5. hours) and from there toSzklarska Poreba (leaving from the train station, 30 min). It is a 20 min steep walk from the bus station to the ski lift if you go up by the little river.
Note that there are two ski lodges accessible by foot from the ski lift: Schronisko Szrenica and Schronisko Szrenica. You will be accommodated in Schronisko Szrenica, which is straight uphill from the ski lift. Please travel in a group in case of foggy weather as it is very, very easy to get lost.
By foot:
Czech Republic, Harrachov: The lodge can be reached by walking across the border (about 3 hours, mainly uphill). You should only attempt this if you are in good physical condition and have hiking boots and only if the weather is good (in any case do not walk alone unless you are experienced). Take a bus from Prague to Harrachov. There is a regular bus service from Prague to Harrachov (starting near metro station Cerny Most, the fast service takes roughly two hours while the slower line is closer). The Czech travel planner IDOS has an English page for checking the details. If the weather is bad, you can always take a taxi. Otherwise take the path leading up the mountain to the Czech hostelVozecka Bouda. When you reach it, you are approximately 400 metres from the border. Turn left when you reach the Polish walking path immediately beyond the border; from here you will reach the hostel in about half an hour.
