Sybil Studios is my humble basement studio. Over the years my recording equipment has evolved along with my space. From my beginning bedroom recordings on a lowly Fostex X15 to my present computer setup I have tried to make the best out of what I have. Far from state of the art nonetheless, quality in sound has improved with each new piece of equipment.
This is what I started with.
This is the Fostex X15. A lowprice entry level multitrac cassette recorder. I purchased this brand new in 1984. Utilizing borrowed microphones and sometimes effects pedals I recorded with this exclusively until the mid 90s. Quality was low and sometimes questionable. Inputs were limited to 1/4 inch jacks only - no xlr or phantom power. Only two tracks could be recorded at a time but it served its purpose and captured a lot of music that otherwise would be lost. Several projects listed here were recorded on this machine. It was a great sketch pad and was easy to use. I still have it but it is in need of cleaning and repair.
Here are some pics of the current setup. These show the control room area. The recording area is just outside of the control room and continues to evolve.
This setup allows us to mic 12 things at a time and record up to 8 tracks at a time. We can record as many tracks as the computer will handle but usually average around 20. The audio signal is sent from the mixing board into the computer through a Terratec 8 channel interface. Current software is an old copy of Sonar 3 for recording and Audio Cleaning Lab for CD compilation and mastering. Various plugins help round out the sound.
2018 update
