BRIEF HISTORY
of the
SOUTHWEST DISTRICT BAPTIST ASSOCIATION
The American Negro has climbed mountains of obstacles to succeed. Ninety- three years ago (Recorded in 1985) the Negroes were slaves. The first efforts of the emancipated people were to build Churches and schools that their children might be educated and that they might have a place for religious worship. Later as time went on the Southwest District Baptist Association was organized in the year 1868, with Rev. John Gardner as its first Moderator. At that time Rev. Gardner was pastoring the Friendship Baptist Church; Rev. Pollett was Secretary of the organization. The Association comprised a large group of Churches in the southwestern part of the state. This District has been and is among the foremost in Christian Education and Mission work. The following individuals have served as Moderators: Rev. C. D. Oats: Rev. C. A. McCrary; Dr. T. S. Sandefer, and Dr. A. J. Jackson. Dr. Jackson served in the capacity for many years until, his failing health caused him to give up the position. In 1950, Rev. R. G. Gloster was elected Moderator and is still serving in the capacity. He is loved, trusted and respected.
Forward march has been the watchword of these, great leaders. Under the leadership of these capable leaders we have continued to progress numerically, financially, spiritually and intellectually. Those who have served as Vice Moderator include Rev. J. M. Harris of Texarkana; Rev. W. M. Anderson of Prescott; Rev. M. T, Tucker of Hot Springs; Rev. J. M, Stewart of Texarkana, and Rev. M. S. Riley of Texarkana. Rev Riley has served as Vice-Moderator for a number of years and is still serving at the present time.
THE ACADEMY
The Southwest District founded the Academy about 1889, and carried on for a number of years in a very successful way. The school at one time had a large plot of ground in the city of Arkadelphia with a large two-story building on it. After the building was destroyed by fire, owing to the high cost of operating a standard High School, the District decided not to rebuild. Since that time, it has given its support to the Arkansas Baptist College. The District is loyal in supporting the College.
