William A. Webber Crew
The crew of the Miss Fitt trained together in Florida, summer of 1944:
Back row L-to-R:
Sgt. Harold F. Francis (top turret), Lt. Felix D. Wellman, 1st Lt. William A. Webber (pilot), 1st Lt. Raymond O. Wood, Jr. (co-pilot), Lt. Thomas A. Pickett (navigator).
Front row L-to-R: Sgt. Robert Krozer, Sgt. W. Norman Scarffe (waist gunner), Sgt. James F. Berkeley, Sgt. Raymond Wetherbee (with his dog Deacon), Sgt. R. Brock.
The new B-17 was delivered to Savannah on 31 August 1944 and was named the Miss Fitt. In my father's small flight diary, it was referred to as Ship 459, apparently the last 3 numerals in the ID number of the plane. The crew departed from Savannah on 12 Sept., stopping at Grineer, Goose Bay, Iceland, Valley, Stone, and finally Kimbolton. This was one of the rare opportunities where a crew delivered and was assigned to the ship they flew overseas. - Judy Webber Hathaway - daughter of Pilot Lt William Webber
