Race Engine Break-In: 'Born To Run'
I have been asked by several OSS Members to list the steps of how I break-in my Race Engines.
DISCLAIMER - ALL OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE BASED ON MY USE OF EITHER WISECO OR ARIAS PISTONS AND THE ENGINE CONPONANT CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS AND ENGINE OIL TYPE THAT I PERSONALLY USE !!
Although not manditory, I always assign a 'NAME' to my Race Engines. I fell that by doing this it creates a personality to the steel & aluminum that you have spent hundred of hours and thousand of dollars to create.
Break-in Proceedures:
1. For the first race use a mineral based 'Motorcycle Oil' with a viscocity rating of 10w/40 to break in the engine, after the first race you can switch over to the semi-synthetic Motorcycle Oil .
2. Start the engine up and set the idle speed (tickover) to 2500 RPM, let engine run until the oil temperature reaches 180f to 185f degrees.
3. Turn off engine and check for oil leaks.
4. After the engine cools down, retorque the head gaskets.
5. I ALWAYS arrive at the Race Track (Dragstrip) early, usually I am the 1st or 2nd person in line at the pit gate to get in. This allows me the extra time necessary to break in an engine.
6. After I remove my Race Bike from the trailer, I fire up the engine and set the engine idle speed to its normal position (2000 RPM) and let it run until the oul temperture hits 185f degrees.
7. I let the engine cool down for 20 minutes. Then I fire it up and ride it up and down the the Dragstrip return road (1/2 mile) 5 times at 30 MPH in 3rd gear.
8. I then go back to my pit spot and let the bike cool down. I lube and check the drive chain free-play, and check for oil leaks. At this point I put on my leathers and spend the rest of the pre-race waiting time talking to my competitors and fans.
9. When I put my bike in the staging lanes I constantly monitor my engine oil temperture and set my two-step lauchmaster to 7200 to 8000 RPM depending on the track conditions and set the RPM shift light setting . I ALWAYS make sure that before I pull into the burnout area that my engine oil temperture is 160f degrees.
10. I put my bike into the starting beams, crack the throtlle to wide open to put it on the lauchmaster. Concentrate on the Christmas Tree, see the yellow light flash, release the clutch, watch for the shift light to turn on (10,000 RPM) and push the airshifter button to shift into second gear.
11. After finishing the day of racing, and before I load my bike back on the trailer I remove the spark plugs and fog the engine ( spray WD40 thru the carbs will holding the throttle open and turning the engine over).
12. When I unload my bike at home the next day, I will check the cam chain adjustment clearance and the valve adjustment. Then I will change the engine oil to Semi-Synthetic Motorcycle Oil and put in a new oil filter. The last thing I do to my bike is to disconnect the battery, have a beer look at my latest new trophy and put my prize money into the bank.
13. "The hardest part about breaking-in a new Race Engine is waitng for the next race".
