ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM (AAA) SCREENING

AAA often grow undetected and can rupture with little warning. The risk of AAA rupture increases with the size of the AAA. A ruptured AAA is often a fatal event. An AAA is termed a "silent killer" as it often does not cause any symptoms up until the point of sudden rupture. It is now accepted that if an AAA reaches the threshold of 5.5cm in diameter, treatment should be sought to prevent the risks of AAA rupture.

There is now a National AAA screening programme (NAAASP) which aims to provide all male patients with an invitation for an ultrasound scan on their 65th birthday. In addition, anyone who has a first degree relative with a diagnosis of AAA, should have an ultrasound scan at an age five years younger than the age their relative was diagnosed with an AAA. The Surrey Vascular Clinic offers a private ultrasound AAA screening service at the Parkside Suite or Clare Park Hospital for patients who do not qualify for the NHS funded programme. Male patients in the UK who are 65 years old and above should be eligible for free NAAASP scans. Ask your GP for more details.
