Mr. Chong qualified from The London Hospital Medical College in 1993 and trained in basic surgery at the Hammersmith, Chelsea and Westminster and the Royal Brompton Hospitals. He was Clinical Research Fellow in Vascular Surgery at Imperial College, London, winning the European Society of Vascular Surgery Young Investigator prize in 2000. His research was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Glaxo Travelling Fellowship to the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston in 2001 and to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore in 2002. Upon completing his Higher Surgical Training on the South East Thames rotation at Kings College Hospital, London in 2006, he gained further experience in Endovascular Surgery as a Fellow at St. Mary’s Hospital, London in 2007.
Since 2007, Mr. Chong has worked as Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. He was appointed Chairman of the Surrey Vascular Group Network in 2017 after serving as Secretary between 2012 and 2016. The Surrey Vascular Group Network serves West Surrey, East Berkshire and North Hampshire. Frimley Park Hospital is the regional vascular hub unit serving referring spoke hospitals at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke and the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.
He is a course faculty member for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and chairs the Vascular and Endovascular skills simulation training committee for the London Postgraduate School of Surgery at the London Postgraduate Deanery where he teaches minimally invasive laser surgery for varicose veins, ultrasound techniques for vascular surgery and endovascular aortic aneurysm surgery. In addition, he contributes to the training of young surgeons in his role as Educational Supervisor and Interview Panellist in Core Surgery for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Postgraduate Deanery. Mr. Chong also plays a role as Expert Advisor in the Medical Technologies Evaluation programme for the NICE centre for Health Technology Evaluation. Mr. Chong is a South East Coast and South Central regional member of the National Diabetic Foot Care Network. Most recently, Mr. Chong was invited by the Department of Health to be part of a team working on their Cardiovascular Diseases Outcomes strategy document for NHS Improvement. In 2014, Mr. Chong joined the South East Coast Cardiovascular Strategic Clinical Network committee working for NHS England to improve outcomes in Cardiology, Diabetes, Renal and Stroke care delivery for patients across Kent, Surrey and Sussex. He served as a council member to the British Society of Endovascular Therapy (BSET) and chaired the Fellowship and Education committees running the National Vascular Study Day and the BSET Spring Endovascular Courses. He also served as Vascular Surgery Research Lead for NIHR CRN KSS. He is chair and co-director of the TriCounties Diabetic Foot Symposium - a national event for multidisciplinary diabetic limb salvage. He also serves as the Clinical Director for the West Surrey and North Hampshire AAA screening progamme.
Mr. Chong's research interests include intermittent claudication, diabetic limb salvage, stroke surgery, endovenous laser surgery and the role of human factors training on surgical outcomes. He has published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, Phlebology and the British Journal of Surgery and given presentations at the Society of Vascular Surgery (USA), the European Society of Vascular Surgery, the Vascular Society of Great Britain & Ireland and the Asian Society of Vascular Surgery. He is a journal reviewer for the British Journal of Surgery and the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has served as Principle Investigator for several landmark vascular clinical research studies including IMPROVE, LEAP, EVRA, BASIL-2, BASIL-3 and currently EVOCC and STAR.
In recognition of his contributions to patient care, service improvements, teaching and research, Mr. Chong holds a level 4 Clinical Excellence Award.
Mr. Chong has been an invited speaker at the Vascular Society Annual Scientific Meeting, the London Aortic Symposium and the Charing Cross International Vascular Symposium.
He is co-editor of the 2nd edition of "Management of Diabetic Foot Complications" a text book distilling the best of UK diabetic foot care published by Springer.
Mr. Chong is the owner manager and editor of "Vascular & Endovascular Surgery" - the largest and most dynamic international professional group for vascular surgery on Linkedin with over 26000 members worldwide. He has talked about Aortic Aneurysm Care on BBC Surrey Radio in March 2011 and has also been quoted regarding Varicose Vein Care by the Jeremy Vine Show on Radio 2 in February 2013.
His interests outside work include playing the piano, wine and travel.
