To me, teaching is about learning. And learning is, essentially, also about teaching. Just like heads and tails of a coin, I consider both inseparable. Without learning, teaching has no value. Neither does learning without teaching.
I have been enjoying learning and teaching more through informal, rather than formal, ways. Until just recently, I had barely imagined that I would someday be interested in teaching in formal institutions. As I learned more and more, however, I become aware that both formal and informal learning are complementing to each other. Also, I think, places should not be a constraint for teaching and learning to take place. We can make use of anything around us as a learning environment. After all, to be useful for our life, teaching and learning should be developed from, reflected to, and applied in the real life. I am convinced that learning in the field will be enriched by learning in academic environments, and the other way around. Just like the faces of a coin, again, to be valuable they should not be separated.
I am happy to acknowledge that my interest in teaching and learning, particularly in an academic environment, could not be separated from my study at Virginia Tech. The university offers pedagogy-related classes which have sparked and been maintaining my interest in this subject. Thanks to Brian Murphy and Shelli Fowler, among others, who have challenged and helped to discover an effective teaching, learning, and even thinking! By helping the teaching in few courses such as Conservation Biology and Population Dynamic, I have also learned to put teaching and learning theories into practice.
If you are interested in knowing how I view and approach teaching and learning, feel free to view my teaching philosophy. You might also want to look at how I would develop a syllabus for a coursework. You can view a brief description about me or download my vita for the list of my experience related to teaching and others. Furthermore, I am also currently working on a case study for teaching, which hopefully I can publish in the near future. Feel free to contact me for any inquiry.
