Involvement in the management of special interest groups has continued. Although I stepped down from the Council of the Royal Archaeological Institute in May 2017 I have continued to sit on the Board of Archaeology Scotland and Council of the Berwickshire Naturalists’ Club, of which my Presidential Address on the subject of ICI St Boswells was published in the History of the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club, Vol. 54, Part 1 (2017), 1-21.

Two past of my excavations have now been published in the East Riding Archaeologist 15 (2017); these were: “Breil Nook, Flamborough: a medieval signal station?” and “Ling Howe: a long barrow at Walkington on the Yorkshire Wolds”, being works that were originally carried out in 1980 and 1984 respectively. Excavations on an Iron Age and Romano-British settlement at North Cave in 1986-7 is the subject of an application for a publication grant, while work continues on the report of rescue excavations at Brantingham Villa in 1983.

In the summer of 2018 I provided the archaeological supervision on behalf of Ancrum and District Historical Society in the lifting for conservation work of a medieval hogback grave marker in the village churchyard. Clay pipe stem and bone fragments found beneath the stone suggests its re-location, most probably from within the ruined church.

In 2019 I revised my earlier account of the Garton/Wetwang Slack Iron Age cemetery, originally written in 1986 but now combined with earlier work in the valley; I also contributed to Archaeology Scotland magazine and wrote a chapter for The Arras Culture of Eastern Yorkshire: celebrating the Iron Age, edited by Peter Halkon and published by Oxbow. In April I chaired a day conference in Hull, Exploring the Archaeology of Yorkshire Landscapes, in May led a walk by Berwickshire Naturalists' Club members to Edin's Hall Broch in the Lammermuir Hills and in August acted as their guide to the 14th century architecture and carvings of Melrose Abbey church.

Visits to sites in Portugal and Italy since 2011 have shown that coastal settlements in both areas shared a need for defence from at least the 16th century, in part from raids by 'Barbary Pirates'. Fortifications in both areas reflect the influence of gunpowder in warfare and range from the most basic blockhouses to sophisticated forts built on the trace italienne model. My research into such sites is ongoing and, if warranted, may form a publication in due course

As a result, the pair carried out test scans of sites in the Southern Uplands at Pennymuir and Woden Law in the Kale Water valley and on the ruined Fulton Tower near Bonchester Bridge.
