I’m a Physiology graduate from the University of Glasgow, from where I also obtained my PhD in Neurobiology. After appointments in the Universities of Hull and Edinburgh, a Wellcome Trust Vision Research Fellowship allowed me to develop my research interests in vision and eye movement control. I moved to Liverpool in 1999 where I developed my research on human vision and visually-guided behaviour in development, ageing, health and disease. Outwith the University, I was a member of the NICE Medical Technologies Advisory Committee for ten years leading to an active interest in the generation and assessment of clinical evidence, including evidence demonstrating the performance of vision tests deployed on mobile devices. Latterly I was involved in the UK HTA-funded MONARCH study researching tests for home monitoring in neovascular AMD patients.
My teaching was mainly at Masters level, and I was eventually the Programme Director of the MRes in Clinical Sciences in Liverpool. I also taught medical and life sciences students, and was an External Examiner for MRes courses elsewhere.
I retired in August 2021 (although I'm keeping half an eye on these pages) and completed an MTh at the Union School of Theology (ie a Masters in theology; it's not as strange a switch as you might think). If you want to get in touch, you'll have to do some sleuthing in cyberspace - I'm enjoying a quieter email in-box these days.
