Hooray for the red, white, and blue! Students will surely give three cheers for this easy, but eye-catching, patriotic demonstration. My project is about different types of solutions having chemical reactions- such as: changing colors and state of matter- when mixed with one other solution. Easily distinguishing solutions of iron(II) and iron(III) ions by performing redox reactions between iron's two oxidation states. I simply added various complex ions to solutions of iron(II) or iron(III) and observed the formation of the beautifully colored Prussian blue precipitate and of the deep blood-red complex, the confirming test for iron(III)! I gained practice in determining oxidation numbers, writing redox reactions, and analyzing electron configurations.
