Stapleford July electronic newsletter

Stapleford Granary is opening up the grounds and orchard for an outdoor summer village day on Sunday 4th July especially for the Stapleford community. Expect live music, theatre, hands-on activities for children, food & drink and a chance to get together again in a safe environment and enjoy all the things that we have missed so much.

More than 200 people turned out for a demonstration on June 3 to protest against the proposed busway on fields on the edge of Stapleford. Despite the huge opposition, Greater Cambridge Partnership Board yesterday voted to pursue planning permission for the £132m busway through Green Belt despite the opposition of the Parish Council and our MP. A group of elected representatives and campaigners including city, district and parish councillors and our MP, called for the Greater Cambridge Partnership to pause the scheme. (External link)

From 26th June, Great Shelford Library's opening hours were increased to 10am-2pm on Tuesdays, 2-6pm on Fridays and 10am-1pm on Saturdays.

The Granary is re-opening in July with a number of socially distanced concerts this month. And Breabach will be starring in their first courtyard convert in August.

The Shelford country market on Wednesdays is returning imminently while the dental surgery is now carrying out routine appointments. Zara Indian restaurant is one of the local restaurants that should be able to allow back customers to eat inside later this month. They will be opening the restaurant from 5pm on 17th May. There are two changes to our bin collection days in the next fortnight.

Stapleford Council is demanding a rethink on busway the South East Cambridge Busway. An independent report has shown that it could be routed along a disused railway line through Stapleford and Great Shelford rather than on Greenbelt countryside.

Roadworks start on April 6 to improve the junction at the junction of Granham's Road with the A1307. The works will take about three months to complete.

More than 17,000 people in the area have had their first Covid-19 vaccinations after special sessions at the week-end.

A £30,000 Covid recovery grant fund to help local community groups and parish councils resume activities has been launched by South Cambridgeshire District Council.

Rupert Neve who developed some of the best regarded recording equipment in the world in his workshop in Little Shelford has died.

There are some potential changes to the A1307 near Stapleford which will impact on local drivers. They include;

· It will not be possible to turn right out of Haverhill Road towards the A11.

· It will not be possible to turn right out of the Gog Farm Shop onto the A1307.

· The A1307 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction.

The Shelford COVID support group has relaunched with 78 volunteers in place to support every street in Great Shelford during the second wave of the pandemic

The proposed new Oxford to Cambridge rail line could join the Liverpool Street line just south of Shelford station near the London Road Bridge. This would increase rail traffic over the level crossings at Hinton Way and Granhams Road thus causing severe traffic tail backs due to extra down-time of the barriers.

Rejection of proposals to put a nursery in the former Lloyds Bank building empty for almost three years have been described as "absurd" by the Parish Council.

The Great Shelford village mobile warden scheme is looking for a new warden.

The new Angli-Ear hearing solutions office opened in the former Barclays Bank building on Woollards Lane on November 2.

Christopher Jenkin from Great Shelford was awarded the British Empire Medal in October 2020 for services to the homeless in Cambridge during Covid-19.

The Great Shelford Post Office opening hours change from today. The business updates on Great Shelford Online now also include a computer repairer who is still open in the village.

Wandlebury Country Park remains open to enable people to take their once-a-day outdoor exercise. The car park is now open again but the toilets are now closed.

As part of plans to improve journeys times and congestion along the A1307 and A1301, one option consists of a new segregated Mass Rapid Transit Route from the A11 via Sawston, Stapleford and Great Shelford. The deadline about the plans has been extended to April 9 to allow more views of residents to be submitted.
