Yuri Cath: Evidence and Intuition

Intuitions are widely assumed to play a crucial evidential role in philosophy. Timothy Williamson argues that accounts of philosophical methodology based on this assumption lead to a psychologistic conception of philosophical evidence that encourages scepticism about the methods of armchair philosophy. In response to this criticism I show how "the intuition picture" can be formulated in such a way such that it is: (I) consistent with Williamson's views on the nature of evidence; (II) can maintain the central claims about the nature and role of intuitions by proponents of the intuition picture; and (III) does not collapse into Williamson’s own deflationary view of the nature and role of intuitions.
