Dietmar von der Pfordten (Göttingen): For A Third Way in Normative Ethics Between Consequentialism And Deontology

"According to the view set forth in the present paper, an adequate normative ethics has to contain five elements. Amongst others, it has to be based on normative individualism, i.e. the view that in the last instance moral norms and values can only be justified by reference to the individuals concerned. Furthermore, the application of concrete principles and decisions in order to balance interests has to be guided by the meta-principle of relative reference to self and others. I will explain these and the remaining three elements to argue for a third way in normative ethics between consequentialism and deontology."Prof von der Pfordten has recently published a book on this topic (alas, in German): "Normative Ethik" (Berlin, De Gruyter, 2010)You can now see Prof. von der Pfordten's PowerPoint presentation slides.
