SSHS Theatre Monologues Selection Guidelines
Where do we get monologues?
All monologues MUST be from a STAGE PLAY or MUSICAL
No original monologues, no selections “written for teens”- avoid these unless requested to use them.
When searching online ALWAYS search “monologues from PLAYS”
What are the basic requirements?
Monologues must be between 3-5 minutes in length including your intro and outro.
Performances should always be prepared and OFF BOOK unless instructed otherwise.
What you should know in addition to the piece?
The play title
The playwright’s name
What the character’s motivation is
who they are, where they are, what is their goal in the scene?
What happens to the character before and after the monologue.
Always assume the person you are auditioning for knows the play and knows it well. The more you know about your piece/character the better the audition will be
Why these rules?
To help you not only work on actual stage pieces, but to help you put into practice actual professional auditions and not just “get by”. The better prepared you are the more work you will get. AUDITIONS ARE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF THIS BUSINESS!
