About the Authors

Dr. Ruchi Agarwal-Rangnath works as a teacher educator and consultant, and is vice president of the National Association of Multicultural Education, California chapter. A former elementary education teacher, Ruchi’s teaching and research focus is primarily on social studies education, teacher education for social justice, and multicultural education. Ruchi loves to hike, read, and spend time with her family. She recently published Social Studies, Literacy, and Social Justice in the Common Core Classroom: A Guide for Teachers (2013, Teachers College Press) and articles in Social Studies Research and Practice and The Urban Review. Dr. Alison G. Dover is an associate professor in the Department of Secondary Education at California State University, Fullerton. A former urban secondary English Language Arts teacher, Alison’s scholarship examines approaches to teaching for social justice within and despite accountability-driven P–12 and teacher preparatory contexts. When she’s not teaching or chasing after her spitfire daughters (ages 2 and 5), Alison spends her time writing. Her work has recently been published in Teachers College Record, the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, Action in Teacher Education, Equity & Excellence in Education, and Multicultural Perspectives. Dr. Nick Henning is a professor in the Department of Secondary Education at California State University–Fullerton. A former urban secondary social studies teacher, coach, and daycare/afterschool program coordinator in the cities of Los Angeles and Minneapolis, Nick’s present teaching and research focus on effective urban classroom teaching, social justice education, teacher education for social justice, social studies teaching and teacher education, and the creation of high-quality collaborative supports for social justice educators. He has been a teacher educator for 14 years in the teacher education programs of UCLA, Claremont Graduate University, and CSUF, and he is as passionate about soccer as he is about teaching. Dr. Henning’s recent publications include articles in Teaching and Teacher Education and The Urban Review.
