Navin Viswanathan (Director)My research interests include understanding the process of speech perception and production within the general framework of perception, action and cognition. Anne Olmstead (Project Coordinator) My research interests are in human perception, action, and cognition with a concentration in speech and language. In particular, I focus on studying perception, action, and cognition in the context of one another with the idea that understanding the co-dependence of these functions will help in understanding the behavioral flexibility of humans. Most recently, I have been applying this approach to understanding second language and dialect learning in adults and the development of expertise.

My research interests include speech perception and production; audiovisual speech; and psycholinguistics. Currently, my research focuses on the effect adverse listening conditions (e.g., background noise, competing accented speech, and differing spatial locations) have on speech perception. I aim to identify how listeners use linguistic and nonlinguistic cues to process speech. This will aid in our understanding of how individuals are efficient and resilient in perceiving speech despite variability in the acoustic signal. Tifani Biro
Tifani is currently completing her PhD in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Kansas. Prior to this, Tifani graduated from the Villanova University in 2016 with a Master's of Science in Psychology. At Villanova, she completed thesis research with Dr. Joseph Toscano, studying how experimental environment influences phonetic convergence (changing one's speech sound to match another's) among interlocutors. Tifani's current research expands upon this work and focuses on how experimenters can increase task naturalness in psycholinguistic experiments using virtual systems. She is also interested in computational modeling and cognitive neuroscience.
Undergraduate Researchers
Chris Fairleigh
Frank Kim
I am a sophomore studying Speech-Language Hearing. My research interests include speech perception and language, with special interests in coarticulation and audio-visual interaction. I am in the beginning stage of my research experience, but I hope to gain more knowledge and become more involved in the SpLaCo lab.
I am a junior majoring in Speech-Language-Hearing with a minor in Spanish. My research interests include bilingualism and phonetic convergence.
Darcy (Diana) Koesterer
I am currently researching how speech rate and background speech impact function word reception within a message. I am interested in further researching speech rate and masking. I am also interested in researching language acquisition and development.
We are always looking for motivated undergraduate and graduate students who don't mind a bit of a lot of toil! If you're interested in speech and language research, contact us to find out about independent study possibilities.
