UPDATE ON SHERMAN ROAD TREE CUTTING: Over 150 trees in the right-of-way on Sherman Road between Sperry and Heath roads were slated to be removed in 2020. Because of resident opposition, fewer than 40 were removed. Great news for Sherman residents.
UPDATE ON ROAD DEPT: In May 2019 Chester Road Superintendent Mike Farrell resigned. READ THE ARTICLE HERE IN THE CHESTERLAND NEWS. Since then, Chesterland has had gone through three more road superintendents. Trustee Joe Mazzurco has been the liaison throughout.
In Feb. and March of 2019, over 150 trees on a .8 mile stretch of Sperry Road in Chester Township were cut.
Many were healthy, 100+ year-old trees that sat high above the road and posed no threat to safety or safe passage.
Trustees cited shade and slippery leaves from the trees as justification for removal.
Trustee Joe Mazzurco also cited power lines as a need for removal, yet there are no power lines on the east side of Sperry Road where 70 large trees were felled
Trustee Mazzurco falsely stated that their removal was required by the Ohio Public Works Commission, which denied it
Written notification to homeowners said trees would be trimmed and only removed in "certain circumstances," yet the street was clear-cut.
Van Curen Tree Services was awarded the $38,000 job in a no-bid contract.
The entire amount was paid for by local funds only.
Residents whose homes were never viewable from the road were left with gaping holes in their landscape.
