Pinewood Derby

Our annual Pinewood Derby is coming up and I wanted to make sure that you all had the current rules and regulations that our Pack uses (see attached). The Council has a set of rules out there, but we've had some problems with vagueness in the past, so we started using our own, slightly stricter, rules. Therefore, if you meet our requirements, you can race in the District and Council derbies as well without incident.

The main rule that MUST be followed is that all derby cars must be constructed from the parts in the official derby car kit that the Pack has provided (including the wood block). The only exception to this rule is that official color BSA wheels can be substituted only if purchased at the council office scout shop in Brighton and they are the same wheel as provided in the kit. Purchased pre-made cars or purchased unfinished pre-cut car body kits are not allowed and will be disqualified.

Car kits were handed out at the last den meeting. If you weren't there, you'll get yours next week. The race itself is on Saturday, January 19th at 9am at the Cosgrove Middle School Cafeteria. Each car must be at or below 5 oz, and the weigh-in process takes a lot of time so we have a mandatory weigh-in on Friday, January 18th from 5:30-7:30pm at the same location. If you can't make it that night, send your car with someone else so you can still race on Saturday. Once it's weighed-in, we confiscate all the cars and keep them overnight so they can't be modified once they're weighed-in. If your car is under weight at weigh-in, you may add weights, but we can no longer provide them as our supply has run out.

If you need any help building your car, we are hosting a build workshop at the scout lodge on Saturday, December 29th from 9:30am-12pm. We have saws, drills, and sandpaper so you have no excuse to not build a car. Even if you have all the tools, stop by just to chat with others to get ideas about how you want your car to look. There are other awards besides the race trophies so even if you don't have a fast car, the boys get to vote for: "most original," "best paint job," "coolest," "fastest looking," and "funniest." Have fun with it and enjoy introducing your scout to some tools and woodworking! This year, the Scout Shop on Brighton-Henrietta Townline Road is hosting a Champ Camp event on Saturday, January 12th from 10am-2pm, where you can get tips on how to build a fast car and test it on their practice track. Follow this link to get more information about that event.
