How to create a Windows 8 Recovery Partition from Scratch in Windows 8

People often get confused between creating a recovery partition in Windows 8 and creating a recovery drive in Windows 8. If you create a recovery partition in Windows 8 you are effectively creating an image of your computer so it can be refreshed without too much hassle. If you are creating a recovery drive in Windows 8, then you are creating a USB recovery drive so it will help you boot up your computer. This USB can either have the full recovery partition copied to it or it can have simple system boot files.

In this article I am going to show you how to create a recovery partition in Windows 8. But first we need to see if you already have a recovery partition on your system.

Does My PC Already Have a Recovery Partition?

You cannot copy the recovery partition over to your recovery drive if you do not have one and you cannot refresh your computer if there are no files to refresh from.

Reinstalling all of your Desktop apps can be time consuming, so Windows 8 offers a command called recimg.exe to make this easier. Recimg creates an image which is used by the refresh facility when restoring Windows. Not only will your personal data and Metro style apps be saved, but so will Desktop apps you have installed at the time you create the image. This can save you a lot of time.
