Dr. Pratihar is currently a Professor (HAG Scale) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Ex-in-charge of the Centre for Excellence in Robotics, IIT Kharagpur, India. He has been appointed as Associate Dean (Faculty of Inter-Disciplinary Departments) for 2 years w.e.f. February 2024. He obtained BE (Hons.) and M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from REC (NIT) Durgapur, India, in 1988 and 1994, respectively. He received his Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur, India in 2000. He visited Kysushu Institute of Design, Fukuoka, Japan, and then Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, for his post-doctoral study under the Alexander von Homboldt Fellowship, Germany. Besides several scholarships, he received the University Gold Medal, A. M. Das Memorial Medal, Institution of Engineers' (I) Medal, Shastri Indo-Canadian Fellowship, INSA Teachers' Award 2020, New Code Of Education 2021 Award, Distinguished Alumnus Award 2021 from NIT Durgapur, Institute Chair Professor Award 2022 from IIT Kharagpur, Technologist of the Year 2022 from IEEE India Council, Mentor of Chanakya Fellowship 2022-23, 2023-24, India, Faculty Excellence Award 2023 from IIT Kharagpur, VASVIK Award 2022 for Industrial Research,. He has made notable contributions on the fundamentals and applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Industrial Automation, Robotics, Health Care, Education Technology, and others. He was among the World's Top 2% Scientists in Image Analysis and Artificial Intelligence in a survey carried out by Stanford University, USA, in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024. He was listed as Outstanding Researcher 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 by Research.com (www.research.com). He has guided 30 PhDs and 91 MTech students. At present, 9 Ph.D. students are working under his supervision. He has published more than 340 papers/book chapters and 9 books. He had been written the Textbooks on "Soft Computing" and "Fundamentals of Robotics" , which were published from India and UK. His textbook on "Soft Computing" had been translated into Chinese language also, in 2009. The 3-rd Edition of "Soft Computing" and 2-nd Edition of "Fundamentals of Robotics" have been published recently as "Soft Computing and AI: Fundamentals and Applications" and "Fundamentals of Robotics and AI", respectively. He has jointly edited three books on "Intelligent Autonomous Systems", which has been published by the Springer-Verlag, Germany; "Biomedical Robots and Devices in Healthcare", and "Advancing Healthcare through Decision Intelligence: Machine Learning, Robotics, and Analytics in Biomedical Informatics" (published by the Elsevier); and one Conference Proceedings published by the Springer Nature, Singapore. Recently, he has co-authored another textbook named "Analytical Engineering Mechanics". He has co-authored four reference books on "Modeling and Analysis of Six-legged Robots", "Modeling and Simulations of Robotic Systems Using Soft Computing" and "Modelling and Analysis of Laser Metal Forming Processes by Finite Element and Soft Computing Methods" and "Multi-body Dynamic Modeling of Multi-legged Robots". He has developed four On-line NPTEL courses (MOOC) namely (i) Traditional and Non-Traditional Optimization Tools; (ii) Robotics; (iii) Fuzzy Logic and Neural Networks, (iv) Experimental Robotics. He is a member of Editorial Board of 6 international journals and Associate Editor of one International Journal. He has filed five patents, out of which three have been granted, till now. Moreover, one copyright has also been granted. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE) in 2023, Fellow of Institution of Engineers (I); Senior Member of IEEE, Member of ASME , Member of AMM, Member of AAAI.
