Ph.D. in Economics from the Quantitative Economic Doctorate at the Universidad de Alicante in 1998, with a degree in Economics at the Universidad Pública de Navarra in 1993.
My research areas include Political Economy and Public Economics; among other topics, I have studied the competition among political parties, elections, and public sector policymaking (see a recent interview).
I am currently working on two main projects: one investigates how national identities influence perceptions of political party positions, while the other examines the factors shaping citizens’ preferences toward European integration. Both projects contribute to my broader research interest in federal democracies and supranational unions as democratic frameworks that can enhance national governance.
My recent research has been published in the following refereed journals: Electoral Studies, European Economic Review, European Journal of Political Economy, European Political Science Review, Journal of Theoretical Politics, Public Choice, Social Choice and Welfare, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Journal of Public Economic Theory, and Theory and Decision.
I have benefited from several visiting appointments at Harvard University, the University of Rochester, the Université Catholique de Louvain, the University of Copenhagen, Bielefeld University, the University of Namur, Pompeu Fabra University, and the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona.
Currently, I teach Electoral Analysis, Welfare Economics, and Advanced Microeconomics. Since June 2022, I have served as the Head of the Department of Economic Theory and Economic History.
