Ph.D. in Economics from the Quantitative Economic Doctorate at the Universidad de Alicante in 1998, with a Grade in Economics at the Universidad Pública de Navarra in 1993.
My research areas are Political Economy and Public Economics; among other topics, I have studied political parties' competition, elections, and public sector policymaking (see a recent interview). I am currently involved in two main projects, one exploring the impact of national identities on perceived party placement and another studying the determinants of citizens' preferences on European integration. These two projects are pieces of my broader interest in exploring federal democracies and transnational federal unions as democratic structures that improve national governance.
My recent research has appeared in the following refereed journals: Electoral Studies, European Economic Review, European Journal of Political Economy, European Political Science Review, Journal of Theoretical Politics, Public Choice, Social Choice and Welfare, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Journal of Public Economic Theory or Theory and Decision.
I have benefited from several visiting appointments at Harvard University, the University of Rochester, the Université Catholique de Louvain, the University of Copenhagen, Bielefeld University, the University of Namur, Universidad Pompeu Fabra, and Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona.
Currently, I teach Electoral Analysis, Welfare Economics, and Advanced Microeconomics. Since June 2022, I am Head of the Department of Economic Theory and Economic History.
