I am Socorro Puy, Professor of Economics at the University of Málaga and Head of the Department of Economic Theory and Economic History (since June 2022). I earned a PhD in Economics from the Quantitative Economics Doctorate at the Universidad de Alicante (1998) and a BA in Economics from the Universidad Pública de Navarra (1993).
My research spans Political Economy and Public Economics, focusing on how electoral rules and institutional designs interact with voter heterogeneity—party perceptions, identity, ambiguity attitudes, and views of multilevel (national and supranational) governance—to shape party competition and electoral behaviour. My current projects combine theory with survey data from national and European opinion studies (see a recent interview).
My work has appeared in Electoral Studies, European Economic Review, European Journal of Political Economy, European Political Science Review, Journal of Theoretical Politics, Public Choice, Social Choice and Welfare, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Journal of Public Economic Theory, and Theory and Decision.
I have held visiting appointments at Harvard University, the University of Rochester, Université Catholique de Louvain, the University of Copenhagen, Bielefeld University, the University of Namur, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. I teach Microeconomics, Political Economics, and Welfare Economics.
