Most important is to start and stick to a regular practice routine of 15-20 minutes every day. Parents and Guardians, please talk about this with your child and help him/her to find a time and place for daily practice.
Once you've established the when, here are the most important things you need to get the most out of practicing:
1) A place to practice free of distractions
2) A sturdy chair (students, please do not practice on your bed or on the floor). Practicing while standing is fine too!
3) A music stand (folding music stands cost about $20 available at local music stores or online click here for an example)
A regular practice routine helps develop discipline, and aids in the development of music reading skills and better technique, fine motor skills and muscle memory. Students who practice regularly improve far more rapidly than those who practice sporadically. When students improve, they enjoy playing their instrument more and practicing becomes fun!
Parents can aid so much in encouraging their children to develop these regular practice routines, and this routine, once established, provides a relaxed and enjoyable process that everyone understands and values. Take some time now to help your child come up with a practice routine that works for him or her.
