Sleeping Giant Inc. (SGI) was founded in 1997 by Henry Shenk in the attic of his small family home in the Interbay/Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Henry worked out of the family attic for the first two years of SGI's history, and the company's working capital at the time was $20,000.00 on loan from Henry's mother. Henry was able to use that capital to buy low cost goods and selling a few cases at a time, primarily consisting of Alaskan pollock filet and block frozen squid, to local restaurants. In 1998, Henry moved SGI out of the family attic to Pier 91 and worked mostly solo for the following three years. During this time, he developed Alaskan cod filet markets. Kayoko, Henry's wife, came on full time to SGI in 2001 and developed round sole, which opened several new markets and species opportunities for SGI. Nine years after Kayoko joined SGI, Kayoko and Henry's son, Shincho, began working at SGI full time in December 2010. Shincho was raised on Alaska pollock filet growing up, and had worked part-time for SGI prior to 2010 doing small, local deliveries, product inspections and "home-packs." Since his first full-time work day at SGI, Shincho has developed salmon, black cod, rockfish markets for the company, but notably has evolved the company into secondary/custom processing. Both Shincho's sister and brother have created logos for the company. Shincho's sister, Harmony, created the original SGI logo in grade school in the 90's. His brother, Henry, created the current logo about eight years ago.
In April 2017, Henry retired from the day to day operations and Kayoko retired summer 2023. Both are enjoying more free time, which has always been their goal. Shincho has since taken the reins of the company and continues the SGI legacy as President, along with the help of the rest of the team.
