This course provides the in's and out's of plant knowledge that any horticulture major must know. I have learned everything from what elements benefit plants and how they benefit them to all the different parts of plants and how we can alter these parts to grow more plants.
Hort Sciences and Practices Lab - HORT 202
I took HORT 202 with HORT 201 and they were great for making the material stick because what I learned in lecture, I would practice in lab. I was able to do hands on experiments with plants such as propagating ten different plants, and using root hormone to promote root growth in cuttings.
Sociohorticulture - HORT 335
Hort 335 showed me how plants can be applied to everyday life and how they can greatly benefit human health. I have learned that through people-plant interactions, horticulture provides a beneficial rise in the increase of recovery in hospital patients.
Plant Propagation - HORT 326
Hort 326 was one of my favorite classes where I learned the art of plant propagation. The main topics of this course include the principles, practices and techniques in sexual and asexual propagation of horticultural plants.
Garden Science - HORT 301
Garden Science provided the basic structure to any horticulture major learning the science behind gardening. Some examples of what I learned are soil management, fertilizer and pesticide applications, indoor and landscape ornamentals, and fruits and vegetables.
Trees and Shrubs for Sustainable Built Environments - HORT 306
Hort 306 really challenged me because each week we were given anywhere from 10-25 plants to learn the scientific and common name and be able to identify them. We also learned all the specific traits they had and their use in a landscape environment.
Issues in Horticulture - HORT 315
Hort 315 was a great class for me to take because it made me dive deep into my interests of horticulture to get a better understanding of what my future holds.
Plant Pathology - PLPA 301
Plant pathology is the science of plant diseases, their nature, causal agents and interrelated phenomena. In this class, I learned many different plant diseases from bacteria to viruses to fungi and how to eradicate them or at least help lessen their effects to the plant.
Understanding Wine - HORT 416
Hort 416 laid the foundation of enology for me. I learned the history of wine, grape growing and winemaking, types of wine, wine etiquette, beer and spirits, sensory evaluation, and wine marketing. This class helped start my interest in pursuing my enology certificate.
Viticulture and Small Fruit - HORT 419
Hort 419 was a class more specific to the actual growing of grapes and how to have a successful vineyard. In this class, I learned the influence of terrior on a wine.
Enology - HORT 421
Hort 421 provided a basic structure and understanding of the steps to creating wine. I learned starting at growing the grapes to processing the wine and even made my own wine in the lab portion.
Nursery Production and Management - HORT 431
Nursery production and management taught me all about nursery businesses and what it takes to have a successful nursery. I learned all the differences between retail and wholesale nursery.
Seminar - HORT 481
Seminar has prepared me for the transition from college to the work environment. In this class, I have learned and practiced speaking in front of people and how to properly prepare for an interview.
